of October he experienced a return of the same complaint and was recommended a trip to Shanghar, which proved in consequence beneficial, but his general health has become so much impaired that scarcely a week passes without an abscess, and although every trick of treatment has been tried, there is little prospect of his health being restored without a change of climate. I have therefore to recommend in the strongest manner that leave of absence be granted to W. Bun. for a period as will enable him to take a voyage to Europe.

I have carefully perused the preceding statement respecting the health of the Lenz; and, having examined that gentleman, I find that the symptoms of Rheumatic disease, detailed by Dr. Goring, have returned with considerable severity. A tropical climate is, of all then, the most unsuited to an arthritic constitution, and, of all pursuits, that of a maritime life.
I have little doubt that a return to Europe will again restore the Lenz to health; to preserve which his employment should be deferred.
